Spotify for Authors —
What You Actually Need to Know
Spotify's audiobook program is growing and attracting attention from indie and traditionally published authors alike. This guide explains exactly what it is, how it works, how it compares to ACX, and whether it belongs in your distribution strategy — without the hype.
Quick Answer
Should you put your audiobook on Spotify?
Probably yes — if you're on non-exclusive ACX or haven't signed yet. Spotify via Findaway Voices adds distribution reach with no extra recording cost. It's most valuable if you already have a Spotify audience. It's not a replacement for Audible, but it's a low-friction addition to a broader distribution strategy.
What Is Spotify for Authors?
Spotify for Authors (also called Spotify Audiobooks) is Spotify's audiobook distribution and listening program. Authors upload their finished audiobooks and make them available to Spotify's 600M+ monthly users, who access them through their Spotify subscription. Unlike ACX/Audible — which is a purchase platform — Spotify is a streaming platform. Authors earn per-stream payouts rather than per-sale royalties.
Before You Think About Platforms: Get Your Files Right
Distribution is only as good as the files you're distributing. Before you worry about Spotify vs ACX vs Findaway, make sure your production is ready. Here's what you need before any upload.
Your recording must meet technical standards
Spotify requires similar technical quality to ACX: MP3 format, consistent levels, clean noise floor. Files that were rejected by ACX will likely be rejected by Spotify too.
You need edited, mastered audio files
Raw recordings are not uploadable. Every chapter needs to be edited (cleaned of errors, pacing issues, breath noise) and mastered to platform specifications before upload.
Chapter files must be individual and properly labeled
Each chapter or section should be a separate MP3 file, labeled correctly. You'll also need a retail sample file.
You need a Findaway Voices account to upload
Spotify doesn't accept direct author uploads. You distribute through Findaway Voices, which then delivers to Spotify (and 40+ other platforms). Setting up the account is free.
Cover art and metadata must be ready
You'll need a cover image in the correct dimensions, your book's metadata (title, author, genre, description), and an ISBN if you have one.
PHQ delivers all of this.
Every PHQ audiobook package produces chapter-by-chapter MP3 files, mastered to platform specifications, ready for immediate upload to ACX, Findaway Voices, or Spotify. You don't need to touch a single audio editor.
When Spotify Makes Sense for Your Audiobook
You already have a Spotify audience
If your podcast, music, or other content is already on Spotify, your existing followers can discover your audiobook in the same app they use every day. This is the single strongest case for Spotify distribution.
Your readers are under 35
Younger listeners are significantly more likely to discover audiobooks on Spotify than Audible. If your book's target audience skews younger, Spotify is increasingly important.
You want maximum distribution coverage
Adding Spotify to a non-exclusive ACX strategy (via Findaway Voices) costs nothing extra. More platforms = more discovery surface area. There's no reason not to include it when you're already distributing widely.
You're not locked into an exclusive ACX contract
ACX exclusive agreements prevent Spotify (and any other) distribution. If you're on non-exclusive ACX or haven't signed yet, Spotify is open to you.
You write in certain genres
Self-help, personal development, business, and wellness content tends to perform well on Spotify, partly because these listeners already use Spotify for podcasts in those categories.
When Spotify Is Less of a Priority
Your audience is primarily older adults
Audible still dominates with listeners 40+. If your readership skews older, prioritize ACX/Audible first.
You're in an exclusive ACX contract
Exclusive ACX agreements prohibit any other distribution, including Spotify. Read your contract carefully before signing.
You're expecting high per-book revenue on Spotify
Spotify's per-stream model pays less per listen than Audible's per-purchase model. Revenue from Spotify complements Audible — it doesn't replace it for most authors.
You want Spotify as your only distribution channel
Spotify is best as part of a multi-platform strategy, not as a standalone option. Audible still has the largest dedicated audiobook audience.
Spotify vs ACX / Audible
These are different platforms with different business models, audiences, and revenue structures. They complement rather than compete with each other.
