How Long Does It Take
to Record an Audiobook?
An Honest Answer.
The short answer: longer than most authors expect. Recording is only one of six phases. Editing, mastering, quality review, file delivery, and platform approval all add time — and each phase has its own variables. This guide breaks down every phase so you can plan your project realistically.
Quick Answer
From first recording session to published audiobook: 6–12 weeks is a realistic expectation for most full-length books. Recording typically takes 1–3 weeks. Post-production takes 10–14 business days. Platform review adds 2–4 more weeks. Shorter books can move faster; longer books with complex content take longer.
Recording Time by Word Count
Based on a professional narration pace of ~9,300 finished words per studio hour, including retakes. These are realistic, not best-case estimates.
| Book Type | Word Count | Studio Hours | Finished Audio | Sessions | PHQ Package |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short guide / lead magnet | 5,000 | ~1.5 hrs | ~0.5 hrs | 1 session | Narrator Kids ($300) |
| Short nonfiction | 10,000 | ~2 hrs | ~1.1 hrs | 1 session | Narrator Lite ($400) |
| Business book (short) | 25,000 | ~5 hrs | ~2.7 hrs | 2–3 sessions | Narrator Core ($1,000) |
| Business book (full) | 40,000 | ~8 hrs | ~4.3 hrs | 3–4 sessions | Narrator Pro ($1,600) |
| Full-length nonfiction | 60,000 | ~12 hrs | ~6.5 hrs | 4–6 sessions | Narrator Elite ($2,400) |
| Novel / long memoir | 80,000 | ~16 hrs | ~8.6 hrs | 6–8 sessions | Narrator Signature ($3,200) |

Full Production Timeline — Phase by Phase
Recording is only one of six phases. Here's how long each stage takes — and how the self-managed path compares to working with PHQ.
Manuscript Prep
1–2 weeks
Self-Managed
Read-through, pronunciation markup, handling visuals for audio. Authors often underestimate this phase.
With PHQ
We send a prep guide after booking. Come to session 1 with a marked-up, read-aloud-tested script.
Recording
Varies — see table
Self-Managed
Home recording: 1.5–3x studio time due to setup, troubleshooting, and retake rates.
With PHQ
Professional studio with live engineer. ~9,300 finished words per studio hour including retakes.
Editing
1–2 weeks
Self-Managed
Highly variable. DIY editing requires DAW skill. Most first-timers underestimate by 3–5x.
With PHQ
Included in 10–14 business day turnaround. No additional coordination needed from you.
Mastering
1–3 days
Self-Managed
Requires DAW and ACX specification knowledge. A common source of technical rejections.
With PHQ
Included — every file ACX-compliant on delivery. Zero risk of technical rejection.
QC & Delivery
1–2 days
Self-Managed
Author responsibility — naming, specs, chapter formatting.
With PHQ
Pre-delivery QC review included. Files arrive named and organized for direct upload.
Platform Review
3–30 days
Self-Managed
ACX review: 3–5 days automated + up to 30 days human review. Rejection resets the clock.
With PHQ
With ACX-compliant files, most clients pass review without delay. Rejection from PHQ-produced files is extremely rare.
Total PHQ Timeline
From booking to file delivery: 2–4 weeks depending on book length and session scheduling. From file delivery to Audible approval: add 2–4 more weeks. Plan your launch announcement for after approval confirmation, not after file delivery.
Why Audiobook Production Takes Longer Than Authors Expect
These are the four most common reasons authors underestimate their timeline.
Vocal fatigue in long sessions
Recording more than 2–3 hours in a single session causes audible vocal degradation toward the end. Professional studios space sessions to protect audio consistency — a book that sounds equally good in chapter 1 and chapter 18.
Editing complexity varies by narrator
A narrator with naturally clean delivery — consistent pacing, controlled breathing, few stumbles — generates much less editing work than a narrator who needs extensive cleanup. This is why editing estimates are always ranges, not fixed numbers.
Pickup sessions for corrections
After the editor assembles a chapter, they may flag sections that need to be re-recorded. "Pickups" — short additional sessions to record specific lines or paragraphs — are common and add 1–3 days.
Platform processing time is outside your control
Once your files are submitted, platform review time is out of anyone's hands. ACX targets 30 days; in practice it's often 2–3 weeks. Findaway Voices typically processes faster. Plan your launch date around a post-approval window, not a submission date.
