Podcast Editing Workflow

How Long Does Podcast Editing Take?

There is no universal editing time because two one-hour podcasts can require radically different post-production.

Short answer

A clean audio podcast may take roughly the length of the episode to several times the episode length to edit, while a multicamera video episode can take substantially longer. The biggest variables are raw quality, number of tracks and cameras, edit density, graphics, captions, social clips, revisions, and turnaround expectations.

Clean recording shortens post-production.
Multicamera editing adds synchronization and shot selection.
A “one-hour podcast” does not mean one hour of editing.
Revision rounds can become a major part of delivery time.

Why editing time varies so much

An editor may only need to trim starts and ends and balance levels, or may need to remove dozens of mistakes, repair audio, synchronize multiple cameras, add graphics, create captions, find social moments, and export several versions.

Audio-only editing

Audio-only episodes are usually the simplest workflow. Time increases with heavy cleanup, many cuts, multiple remote tracks, inconsistent levels, or detailed sound design.

Video podcast editing

Video adds camera synchronization, shot selection, visual cleanup, color matching, graphics, and larger export files. If the show also needs vertical clips, each clip becomes its own mini edit.

How creators can reduce turnaround

Use reliable microphones and monitoring.

Record separate tracks.

Keep the set and camera settings consistent.

Mark mistakes during recording.

Send one organized folder with clearly named files.

Approve a repeatable editing template.

Return revision feedback in one consolidated pass.

Turnaround time is not the same as editing hours

A studio may need several business days even if the hands-on edit takes fewer hours because projects are queued, reviewed, rendered, quality-checked, uploaded, and revised. Rush delivery usually requires reserving capacity in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I expect a podcast editor to take?

Expect the answer to depend on the production scope. Ask for the normal delivery window and what it includes instead of assuming editing should match the episode duration.

Why does multicamera editing take longer?

The editor must synchronize the footage, continuously select angles, match visual settings, and manage much larger files.

Do captions increase editing time?

Yes. Automated captions speed up the first pass, but accurate captions still require review, styling, positioning, and sometimes manual correction.

Can I get a podcast edited in 24–48 hours?

Sometimes, if the producer offers rush service and has capacity. Rapid turnaround should be agreed before recording because it affects scheduling and cost.
