Recording Session Planning

How Long Should a Podcast Recording Session Be?

A recording session should be longer than the planned finished episode because setup, settling in, mistakes, pickups, and breaks all use time.

Short answer

For a single 45–60 minute episode, many creators should reserve around 90 minutes to 2 hours so there is time for setup, sound check, guest arrival, the conversation, pickups, and buffer. Batch sessions need additional breaks and transition time between episodes.

Do not book exactly the final episode length.
First-time guests usually need more setup time.
Video and multi-camera sessions need more buffer than simple audio.
Batch days should include breaks.

Why a one-hour episode needs more than one hour

Recording time includes arrival, microphone positioning, camera framing, sound checks, pre-roll conversation, restarts, pickups, file checks, and transitions.

A practical planning range

30-minute episode: often 60–90 minutes of studio time.

45–60 minute episode: often 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Long-form interview: 2+ hours depending on format.

Multiple episodes: add reset and break time between recordings.

When to book extra time

Add buffer for first-time hosts, several guests, complex camera setups, product demonstrations, wardrobe changes, branded segments, remote connections, or significant short-form content recorded after the episode.

Avoid rushing the end

The final ten minutes of a session often contain closings, sponsor reads, pickups, thumbnails, promo clips, or file verification. A small buffer protects the quality of the entire production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is two hours enough to record a podcast?

For many single-episode productions, yes. It depends on episode length, guest count, setup complexity, and whether you are also recording promotional content.

How much setup time does a podcast need?

A prepared studio can set up quickly, but guest seating, microphones, cameras, lighting, branding, and remote connections still need verification before the conversation starts.

Can I record two episodes in two hours?

Sometimes for shorter, structured episodes, but it leaves little buffer. Three or more hours is often more comfortable for two full conversational episodes.

Should I arrive before my booked time?

Follow the studio’s policy. If early access is not included, arrive with guests and materials ready so the booked session can begin efficiently.
