Microphone Technique
How Far Should You Sit From a Podcast Microphone?
Microphone distance is one of the easiest ways to improve podcast audio without buying new equipment.
Short answer
A useful starting point for many spoken-word podcast microphones is roughly 3–6 inches from the mouth, slightly off-axis if plosives are a problem. The exact distance depends on microphone type, gain, room acoustics, voice level, and whether a pop filter is used. Consistency matters more than hitting one exact number.
Why distance changes the sound
As you move away from the microphone, the direct voice becomes weaker relative to room reflections and noise. Moving closer increases presence but can exaggerate breath noise, plosives, and bass on some microphones.
Dynamic vs condenser microphones
Many broadcast-style dynamic microphones are designed for close speech. Sensitive condenser microphones may work farther back but also capture more room sound, so the room itself becomes more important.
Use an off-axis angle when needed
Turning the microphone slightly so bursts of air do not hit the capsule directly can reduce harsh P and B sounds while keeping the voice close.
The biggest mistake: changing distance constantly
Leaning far back, turning away, or moving toward and away from the mic creates level and tone changes that are difficult to fully correct in editing. Keep the microphone positioned where normal conversation feels comfortable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I touch the microphone while recording?
Usually no. Handling the microphone or stand can create low-frequency bumps and mechanical noise.
Do I need a pop filter?
A pop filter or foam windscreen can help reduce plosives, especially when speaking close to the microphone.
Why does my podcast sound echoey?
The microphone may be too far away, the room may be reflective, or both. Bring the mic closer and improve the room before relying on software cleanup.
Should the microphone be directly in front of my mouth?
It can be, but a slight angle often sounds just as clear while reducing plosives and keeping the microphone from blocking the speaker’s face on video.
